Schuylkill League girls earn 3 medals on Day 1 at states

SHIPPENSBURG — Minersville’s Maggie Hoffman-Long and Avery Miller capitalized on strong starts.

Pottsville’s Alexa Giuffre used a superb finish.

The results were the same.

All three senior standouts walked out of Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium on Friday with PIAA medals around their necks.

Hoffman-Long was fourth in the Class AA girls’ long jump, Giuffre was fifth in the Class 3A triple jump and Miller captured eighth in the Class AA javelin during Friday’s opening day of the PIAA Track and Field Championships.

Hoffman-Long and Miller both notched their top distances on their first attempt. Giuffre needed a big jump on her third attempt to advance out of the preliminaries, then went even further in the finals.

It’s the first PIAA medal for Miller and the second career state medals for both Hoffman-Long and Giuffre.

“I knew coming in that if I wanted to get to the final three throws that my first three had to be good,” Miller said. “I wanted to start with the energy and try to work up from there. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to improve but I was happy to start with a good one to get me to the next three throws.”

Miller competed in two events Friday, taking 20th in the Class AA discus (90-11) in the morning before throwing the javelin in the afternoon.

After fouling on two of her first three attempts in the discus, she was determined to get off to a strong in the javelin.

Her first throw of 118 feet, 3 inches proved to be her best. She followed with throws of 115-0, 105-4, 112-4, 113-3 and 109-3.

Shenango’s Anna McKinley won the event at 139-10. Weatherly’s Kelly Reiner was 16th in 107-6.

“It feels good,” Miller said as she admired her medal. “I never could have imagined I would get this far when I started. It’s a big achievement for me.”

Giuffre was also busy Friday, competing in the Class 3A 100 hurdle and 300 hurdle preliminaries and the triple jump.

The Duquesne-bound senior got off to a blazing start, breaking her own school record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.90. While her time moved her from the 25th seed to 10th, it wasn’t good enough to advance her to Saturday’s finals.

“I felt really good,” Giuffre said. “I didn’t make the final but I was OK with that because I PR’d. I’ve been trying to break 15 seconds the whole season and I finally did it. I was happy.”

In the triple jump, Giuffre was 14th and in jeopardy of missing the cut entering her final attempt of the prelims before leaping 37-2.25 to advance. She followed that with jumps of 37-7, 38-1.5 and 38-1 in the finals to climb to fifth behind Altoona’s Hannah Owulade (38-9), Kiski’s Alaysa Bell (38-7), West Allegheny’s Janiah Hudson (38-2.25) and Altoona’s Jill Long (38-2).

Later in the day, Giuffre struggled in the 300 hurdles and was 24th in the 46.32 seconds. She’ll compete Saturday in the long jump, an event she took seventh at states in last year.

“Honestly, my triple jump didn’t feel great today,” Giuffre said. “I could definitely feel the difference as it went on. My mark was getting closer to the board. I think I could have done better but I think I did well.

“It feels great. I got seventh in the long jump last year and I just started triple jump this year. Getting fifth is a pretty good accomplishment for me. I feel happy with that.”

Hoffman-Long was also looking for her second PIAA medal after taking fourth in the Class AA triple jump last year. Friday she entered the long jump seeded fifth after winning District 11 gold in 18-9.

She got off to a great start, recording the best jump of the entire first round with a leap of 18-3. She couldn’t exceed that jump on any of her final five attempts and placed fourth behind Kutztown’s Clara Engle (19-1.75), Mid Valley’s Olivia Thomas (18-11.75) and Schuylkill Valley’s Lilah Gilmore (18-7.75).

“I’m super pumped,” Hoffman-Long said after getting her medal. “Even just placing one place higher (than her seeding) is so exciting to me because there’s so many people here and everyone’s distances were so close. So getting fourth and it’s higher than I got last year is just awesome to me.

“I knew the rain was coming, so I knew I needed to get a good jump in before it came because I don’t necessarily always do well in the rain. I knew if I could get a really good jump in to start I would be pretty well seeded to go through the rest.”

One thing that hampered Hoffman-Long was the rain that soaked Seth Grove Stadium from roughly 2 p.m. through the rest of the meet. The Tri-Valley student/Minersville track standout was forced to wait several times due to computer malfunctions and other issues with the rain that prevented her from recording a better jump.

Hoffman-Long will compete again Saturday in the Class AA triple jump.

“It’s definitely tough,” Hoffman-Long said. “Just the waiting in general really makes me nervous. The rain is more difficult because I can feel it hitting my face. With rain comes wind and with wind comes slower running and you’re never able to hit the board.”

Here’s a look at how other Schuylkill League girls’ athletes fared Friday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships:

** Pine Grove’s Bella Kassab was 21st in the AA 200 meters in 26.75 seconds.

** Minersville’s Marley Zimmerman took 22nd in the AA 1600 meters in 5:21.88.

** Mahanoy Area’s Hailey Mroczka competed in both of the AA hurdle events. She fell early in the 100 hurdles and did not finish. She was 23rd later in the day in 300 hurdles in 49.82.
