HS Basketball Weekend Roundup: Miners’ Carr hits 1,000, Williams Valley girls extend win streak

MINERSVILLE — Dante Carr made some Minersville history and joined some elite company Saturday afternoon.
The junior forward scored 17 points, including the 1,000th of his career, in the Miners’ 73-37 rout of Marian in a non-league game at the Thomas Fitzpatrick Gymnasium.
Carr reached the milestone on a drive to the basket in the third quarter. He became the 20th male and 41st Minersville player overall to reach 1,000 and is only the third underclassman male (Jared Homa, Al Matakonis) to accomplish the feat.
Carr and his mother, Katie Rowland Carr, became the first Minersville parent/child combo to score 1,000 points.
Carr scored 14 of his points in the first half as Minersville built a 43-15 halftime lead, holding Marian scoreless in the second quarter.
Chase Zimerofsky and Shazier Bethea each added 10 points for Minersville. Gregory Tirpak led the Colts with 14 points.

SHAMOKIN — Quin Smeltz and Sage Smeltz each netted 11 points as the Vikings moved into a tie atop the Schuylkill League Division II standings with a close road win at Lourdes.
Onaleigh Barnes and Vivian Reiprish each hit three 3-pointers and scored nine points for Lourdes, while Hannah Lokitis collected eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Williams Valley, which has won seven straight, can clinch at least a share of the Division II title with a win Monday against Weatherly.

The victory enhanced the Tide’s chances of making the District 11 Class 5A playoffs as Pottsville currently sits in fourth place. The top four teams make the tourney.

Courtney Synder added eight points for Weatherly, which moved into third place in the District 2/11 Class A subregional power ratings with the win.
