Top 10 Stories: No. 9 — Schuylkill Haven girls’ basketball makes history

Schuylkill Haven’s girls’ basketball team accomplished something it had never done before.
Pottsville’s boys’ basketball team accomplished something it has done more than any other local boys’ team.

On Valentine’s Day, the Hurricanes and Crimson Tide filled their hearts with joy by capturing Schuylkill hoops gold at Martz Hall.
In the girls’ final, Mckenna Runkle had 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as Schuylkill Haven knocked off North Schuylkill 38-31 for the school’s first-ever Schuylkill League girls’ basketball crown.

In the boys’ final that followed, Letrel Montone led the way with 20 points as Pottsville turned back Minersville 50-43.
Less than two weeks later, Christian Alvarez netted 14 points and JuJu Bainbridge sparked a stellar defensive effort as Pottsville earned a come-from-behind, 33-30 victory over Bangor in the District 11 Class 5A final.
