WILLIAMSTOWN — Trevon Bair celebrated his 17th birthday Friday by doing what he does best — tackle opposing ballcarriers.
The Williams Valley junior linebacker paced a dominating performance by the Vikings defense as they notched their third straight shutout with a 49-0 rout of Nativity in a Schuylkill-Colonial Blue Division game at Gerry Stauffenberg Field at Viking Stadium.
Bair also added a rushing touchdown as Williams Valley (3-0, 2-0 Blue) used a 28-point second quarter to break open the game and cruise to the victory. In three games, the Vikes have outscored Upper Dauphin, Mahanoy Area and Nativity by a combined score of 145-0.
“Our defense, they’ve been playing great,” Bair said. “Coach Mike (Sedesse) was on us all week about being physical. That’s what we had to do.”
Williams Valley’s defensive dominance was evident in the game statistics.
Nativity (2-1, 1-1 Blue) was held to just one first down, which came on a roughing-the-passer penalty in the second quarter, and compiled only 5 yards of total offense.
The Green Wave rushed the ball 23 times for 1 yard, while quarterback Colt Mason was 2-for-9 for 4 yards. Aaron Sinko punted a whopping nine times.
“They are super, super technical. They don’t make mistakes,” Nativity coach Pat Mason said of Williams Valley. “They line up in the right spots. They block the right guys. They don’t make mistakes. They’re a technically sound football team.
“Obviously, you thrive off the other team making a mistake … blowing a coverage, doing something else. They just don’t make mistakes.”
The key to Williams Valley’s defense came up front. The front five of Bryce Zilinski, Camron Green, Shawn Romberger, Koen Zilinski and Eli Weiss was constantly in the Nativity backfield stuffing Green Wave ballcarriers and clearing lanes for Bair and fellow linebacker Evan Kandybowski to make tackles.
Nativity’s longest gain was a 4-yard run by Connor Felty on the next-to-last play of the game.
“Our big guys up front, that’s what it comes down to,” Williams Valley coach Stephen Sedesse said. “Shawn Romberger, Cam Green … they’re just phenomenal football players.
“When the D-line plays that way, it’s hard for (opposing) linemen to get up and block our linebackers. Our linebackers have been roaming free a lot this year. They’re really taking ownership of being the guy and being a linebacker.”
While the Vikings’ defense was doing its thing, Brady Shomper directed the Williams Valley offense to another impressive performance.
The senior quarterback rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown and completed 8-of-12 passes for 160 yards and three more scores. Fletcher Thompson ran for 124 yards and a touchdown while Colin Crisswell hauled in two touchdowns and Evan Achenbach had one.
“We just had to find our groove,” Shomper said. “The first couple of plays were a little shaky. We just had to wear and tear and beat them down. That’s exactly what we did. We found what we needed to do and it clicked.”
The Vikings opened the scoring in the first quarter when Shomper capped an eight-play, 54-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge. Quin Smeltz booted the first of her seven conversion kicks to make it 7-0 just four minutes into the game.
Williams Valley then scored four times in the second frame to blow the game open. Shomper hit Crisswell for a 22-yard score, Bair ran in from 4 yards out, Thompson reached the end zone on a 15-yard scamper and Shomper hit Crisswell again for a 13-yard TD to make it 35-0 at intermission.
In the third quarter, Achenbach hauled in a 32-yard TD pass and Thompson scored on an 8-yard run.
The Vikings finished with 313 yards rushing, 473 total yards and 23 first downs.
Combine that with a third straight shutout by the Vikings defense and it spelled the perfect birthday present for Bair.
“We came out and we were all over them,” Bair said. “As long as we keep playing like this, we got big things coming.”
