Colts give Brutto 1st win as boys’ coach

 

LANSFORD — Paul Brutto’s debut as the Marian boys’ basketball coach was a successful one.

Jacob De La Cruz paced a balanced attack with 11 points as the Colts downed Panther Valley 49-35 in Friday’s non-league season opener for both squads.

Brutto, the long-time Marian girls’ coach, is in his first season as the Marian boys’ coach. He took over after the death of former coach Scott Murphy earlier this year.

De La Cruz scored seven of his points in the first quarter as the Colts opened up a 15-8 lead after one frame. He added four more in the second frame as Marian extended its advantage to 29-13 at halftime.

Greg Tirpak and Rocco Griguoli each added 10 points for Marian, while Justin De La Cruz tallied nine.

Jarell Thomas led Panther Valley with seven points.

Lehighton 78, Shenandoah Valley 38

HAMBURG — Niko White scored a team-high 18 points and Izayah Lopez added 10 but the Blue Devils fell to Lehighton in the opening round of the Hamburg Tip-Off Tournament.

Blake Roberts paced a trio of double-digit scorers for the Indians with 21 points. Talin Fairchild hit five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, while Cole Dietz netted 13.

Shenandoah Valley will face host Hamburg in Saturday’s consolation game at 6 p.m. Northern Lehigh, a 67-47 winner over Hamburg, takes on Lehighton in the boys’ championship game at 7:30 p.m.

SHENANDOAH — Jocelyn Chagolla scored a game-high 14 points as the Blue Devils rolled past the Rams in the season opener for both teams.

Gianna Donovan added 11 points for Shenandoah Valley, which led 15-2 after one period and cruised from there.

TAMAQUA — Millie Black scored a game-high 21 points and Lauren Ligenza added 14 as the Blue Raiders rolled past ESS at the Tamaqua Athletic Center.

Kendle Miller paced the Tamaqua defense with five steals. The Blue Raiders led 18-2 after one quarter and 39-8 at intermission.
