ORWIGSBURG — Making weight and wrestling two days after Thanksgiving isn’t ideal.

Just ask Blue Mountain and Mount Carmel.

The Eagles and Red Tornadoes both had their issues in Saturday’s non-league season opener, but Blue Mountain did enough to post a 48-27 victory.

Mount Carmel had trouble getting to weight as six members of the roster scratched and did not weigh in. The Eagles got all 22 wrestlers to weigh in, but Blue Mountain had several uneven performances.

“I knew this was going to be an uphill battle with Thanksgiving being two days ago,” Blue Mountain coach Alex Gosch said. “I think that’s a tough ask to come out here, two days after the (holiday), (Friday) focusing on getting our weights down for the first time, so that’s also a challenge. We just need to bring a little more energy to the mat. … Overall, there were some good matches, and there were some things that didn’t go our way. It’s the first match; you’re going to knock the rust off. … We need to get back into the (practice) room and work harder.”

Blue Mountain (1-0) benefitted from three forfeits, including in the first two weights for a 12-0 lead.

Brayden Mirarck (121) got Mount Carmel (0-1) on the board with a fall, but the Eagles’ Cooper Leibold (127) notched a pair of takedowns before turning Thomas Berezovske for the pin in 3:31.

Mount Carmel cut the deficit to 18-12 on Gavin Kotzo’s fall at 133, but Blue Mountain responded with a five-bout run to put the dual meet away.

Troy Mady (139) decked Brayden Figard in 1:12, and Bryce Bodenberg (145) flattened Bradley Clark in 47 seconds for a 30-12 team advantage.

Thomas Herring (152) got into a scrap with Lukas Carpenter and trailed 4-0 in the second period. Herring reversed Carpenter to his back for a four-point move and a 4-4 tie after two periods. Herring scored another reversal in the third period, taking Carpenter to his back at the edge of the mat and earning the pin in 4:23.

Owen Woll (160) took care of business with a pair of takedowns and a fall over Christopher Folk in 1:21. Mount Carmel’s third forfeit to Blue Mountain put the Eagles up 48-12.

The Red Tornadoes took the final three bouts to close the gap, but it wasn’t enough.

Vikes place 4 at Catty

CATASAUQUA — Elisha Weiss (215) placed second to lead Williams Valley to a 10th-place finish at the Rough Rider Invitational at Catasauqua High School.

Weiss had two pins and a major decision en route to the finals. There, Upper Perkiomen’s Drew Bennett pinned Weiss in 5:55.

Colin Crisswell (172) finished fifth, while Xzavion Tennis (145) and Shawn Romberger (285) took sixth for Williams Valley.

Conwell-Egan won the 15-team event with five champions and 230 points. Upper Perkiomen (192) finished second, and Wilkes-Barre Area (189.5) took third,

UDA wins own Lady Trojan Duals

ELIZABETHVILLE — Jada Dillard (136) and Jacelyn Henninger (155) won three bouts apiece — all by fall — to power Upper Dauphin to the title at the Lady Trojan Duals.

Upper Dauphin defeated Annville-Cleona (66-12), Red Lion (65-12) and Northampton (42-30). South Western placed third, and Red Lions finished fourth in the eight-team event.

Tri-Valley competes in a co-op with UDA (3-0). Cambrie Herb (106) went 2-1 on the day.

Kristen Rosado (148), Isabella Latshaw (170) and Chloe Ratcliffe (190) also went 3-0 on the day for the Trojans.
