HS Boys’ Basketball: Wehr guides Panthers to Marian tourney title

PV claims crown at Coach Scott Murphy Christmas Tournament
HOMETOWN — Danny Wehr turned Marian’s Coach Scott Murphy Christmas Tournament into his own personal playground.
The Panther Valley senior scored 56 points in two games to earn Tournament MVP honors as the Panthers captured the tournament title for the second year in a row.
Wehr scored 26 points, drained four 3-pointers and had seven rebounds Saturday as Panther Valley downed host Marian 61-58 in the championship game.
All-Tournament Team selection Brody Breiner added 16 points and six assists for Panther Valley (4-7), while Chase McArdle had seven points and eight rebounds. Jake Tom scored a team-high 15 points for Marian (4-5), which advanced to Saturday’s title game with a 63-37 win over MMI Prep on Friday.
In Friday’s opening round, Wehr scored 30 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had three assists as the Panthers outlasted Jim Thorpe 64-59 in overtime. Jarell Thomas had 12 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots for PV, while Jake Moyer had 11 points and Breiner had nine points and five assists.
Pierce Gothard had 27 points for Jim Thorpe, which defeated MMI Prep 64-28 in Saturday’s consolation game.
No boxscores were provided for any of the Marian Tournament contests.
Cardinal Classic
Pine Grove 67, Lehigh Valley Regional Charter 53
PINE GROVE — Hayden Felty poured in a game-high 25 points and Dane Hannevig added 22 as the Cardinals downed Lehigh Valley Regional Charter in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic on Friday.
Felty had 16 of his points in the first half as Pine Grove built a 32-26 halftime lead. Felty and Hannevig each drained four 3-pointers.
Pine Grove advances to Monday’s noon championship game against Schuylkill Valley, which downed Salem Christian 75-35. Salem Christian and Lehigh Valley Charter will play in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Max Heim scored eight of his 10 points in the final frame as the Hurricanes edged the Golden Bears in a non-league game Saturday.
Alan Evans led Schuylkill Haven with 21 points, while Justin Watcher added 14. Evans had 15 points in the first half to give Haven a 32-26 halftime lead.
Connor Bowman led all scorers with 28 points for Mahanoy Area, which sliced the lead to 40-39 after three frames. Ryan Zilker added 11 points for the Bears.

MILLERSBURG — Trey Porter paced four players in double figures with 22 points as the Dawgs routed Upper Dauphin in Saturday’s opening round of the WQLV Tournament.
Gavin Klock added 19, Braeden Doyle tallied 16 and Cooper Carl netted 12 for Tri-Valley, which scored 61 points in the first half.
The Dawgs will face Schuylkill League Division II rival Williams Valley in Monday’s title game at 7:30 p.m. at Millersburg. The Vikings beat Millersburg 56-15 in the other first-round game.

Two boys’ basketball games involving local schools were postponed Saturday due to weather.
The Blue Mountain at Wyomissing contest was moved to Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. The Millville at Lourdes game was moved to Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2:30 p.m.
