HS Girls’ Basketball: Marek leads Fillies to Coach Scott Murphy tourney title

HOMETOWN — Addy Marek drained a trio of 3-pointers and scored a game-high 15 points as Marian downed Oley Valley 41-25 in Saturday’s championship game of the Coach Scott Murphy Christmas Tournament.
Marek scored eight of her points in the second half as the Fillies outscored the Lynx 21-7 over the final two frames. Deanna Pugh and Haley Minzola each added nine points.
Minersville finished third in the four-team event, scoring its first win of the season with a 34-31 victory over Jim Thorpe in Saturday’s consolation game. Rilynn Brennan led the Miners with nine points, while Jenna Cullen had eight. Lara Gretsky and Cullen each hit 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Miners grab the win.
In Friday’s opening round, Oley Valley defeated Minersville 53-39 and Marian downed Jim Thorpe 48-20.
Caty Ilsley had 11 points and Alayna Boom tallied 10 points for Minersville, which trailed just 23-22 at halftime. Marek and Pugh each had 13 points for Marian.

WQLV Tournament
Williams Valley 39, Millersburg 11
MILLERSBURG — Mallory Miller continued her torrid scoring pace as the Vikings routed the host Indians in the opening round of the WQLV Tournament on Saturday.
Miller drained five 3-pointers and tallied a game-high 22 points for Williams Valley. She hit a trio of triples in the second quarter as the Vikings outscored Millersburg 13-0 to build a 26-3 halftime lead.
Williams Valley will face Upper Dauphin in Monday’s championship game at 6 p.m. at Millersburg.

TAMAQUA — Millie Black scored a game-high 14 points and Lauren Ligenza pulled down 16 rebounds and dished out six assists as the Blue Raiders handed the Golden Bears their first loss of the season in a non-league matchup Saturday.
Kendle Miller added 11 points for Tamaqua, which outscored Mahanoy Area 14-6 in the fourth quarter to capture the win.
Felicia Bro led the Bears with 11 points while Ella Connolly tallied 10.

Pine Grove advances to Cardinal Classic final
PINE GROVE — The host Cardinals reached the championship game of the Cardinal Classic with a 50-36 victory over Shenandoah Valley on Friday night. No details of the game were provided by either team.
Shenandoah Valley (4-6) will take on Fleetwood in the consolation game at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Pine Grove (7-3) will take on ELCO in the championship game at 3 p.m. Monday. ELCO downed Fleetwood 59-14 in the other game Friday.
