HS Boys’ Wrestling: Spartans share lead at Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament

Cadyn McGraw, North Schuylkill

JIM THORPE — Gaige Mentusky (107), Alex Deritis (127) and Cadyn McGraw (215) advanced to the semifinals on a long Day 1 on Monday at the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament. McGraw had four wins, including three pins, while Mentusky won his three bouts by fall.

Gaige Mentusky, North Schuylkill

Those performances, and depth throughout the lineup, lifted the Spartans into a tie for first place in the 30-team event. North Schuylkill and Wallenpaupack both have 132 points. Lehighton (130), Wyalusing Valley (124) and Upper Perkiomen (111.5) round out the top five. Mahanoy Area is ninth and Williams Valley is 10th after Day 1.

Arturo Reyes, Mahanoy Area

For the Golden Bears, Arturo Reyes (127), Rory Dixon (152), Stanley Boris (189) and Kyler Quick (215) reached the semifinals. Dixon and Quick had three pins and a technical fall apiece.

Xzavion Tennis, Williams Valley

For Williams Valley, Xzavion Tennis (145) and Colin Crisswell (172) each had four wins by pin to make the semifinals.

Cole Cook, Pottsville

Pottsville has two semifinalists in Cole Cook (114) and Terrell McFarland (189). Cook and McFarland had three pins apiece. McFarland’s falls came in 1:11, :39 and :21.

Tamaqua’s Rylan Reitz (114) posted three wins to advance to the semifinals.

The tournament concludes Tuesday.

Dawgs, Cards shine at Mifflin

SHILLINGTON — Tri-Valley and Pine Grove had strong performances on Day 1 of the Governor Mifflin Boys’ Holiday Tournament.

The Dawgs are third in the 16-team field with 98 points. The Cardinals rank fifth with 91. Dallastown and Smyrna (Delaware) are tied for the lead with 101.5 points apiece. Middletown is fourth with 93.5.

Jaxson Bruso, Tri-Valley

Ten Tri-Valley wrestlers clinched medals as Owen Wolfgang (107), Jaxson Bruso (133), Parker Hatter (160), Hunter Updegrave (172) and Max Masser (189) advanced to the semifinals. Wolfgang and Bruso had two pins apiece.

Garett Leitzel (121), Brock Bossler (127), Liam Yourey (139), Landon Horoschak (145) and Donovan Keeth (285) are wrestling back in the consolations.

Colby Townley, Pine Grove

For Pine Grove, James Hoy (139), Colby Townley (145), Aaron Osatchuck (152), Zach Kurtz (215) and Scout Frantz (285) marched into the semifinals.

Drew Hikes (133) and Isaiah Miller (172) are still alive in the consolations for Pine Grove.

The tournament concludes Tuesday.

2 Eagles place at Hurricane

BETHLEHEM — Owen Woll (152) placed fourth and Vaughn Helverson (285) finished sixth for Blue Mountain on Monday at the Hurricane Wrestling Classic at Bethlehem Liberty High School.

A 30-team event that features many of the top teams in Pennsylvania, the Eagles finished in a tie for 26th with Delaware Vallety and Wilkes-Barre Area. Nazareth won the team title with 171 points. Emmaus (147), Wilson West Lawn (133.5), Whitehall (131) and Parkland (127) rounded out the top five.

Woll had two pins to reach the semifinals, then fell 4-1 to Kennett’s Zack Jaffe. Woll rebounded with an 8-4 decision over Northwestern Lehigh’s Chase Sukanick, but Woll had to give a medical forfeit in the third-place match.

Helverson went 4-3 with three pins on his way to his sixth-place medal.

Girls’ Wrestling

Cards 4th after Day 1 at Mifflin

SHILLINGTON — Autumn Martin (118), Samantha Eisenhauer (124), Renee Eisenhauer (130), Taylor Bast (136), Geanna Lemke (142) and Rieleigh Purcell (190) advanced to the semifinals Monday at the Governor Mifflin Girls’ Holiday Tournament. Martin, Samantha Eisenhauer and Bast had two falls apiece.

Taylor Bast, Pine Grove

Kiersen Echternach (100) is still alive in the consolations as the Cardinals finished fourth after Day 1.

Emmaus leads the 23-team field with 84.5 points. McCaskey is second with 73, followed by Governor Mifflin (59), Pine Grove (58) and Reading (53).

The tournament concludes Tuesday.
