Emmalee Pinkey, Nativity girls' basketball

POTTSVILLE — William Reed finally has his first victory as the Nativity girls’ basketball head coach.

The Golden Girls gave their first-year coach his first win in 11 tries Saturday afternoon with a 40-34 victory over Bethlehem Christian in a non-league game Saturday afternoon atop Lawton’s Hill.

Emmalee Pinkey paced all scorers with 18 points for Nativity, hitting a trio of 3-pointers. Emily Lorence and Finley McNamara each added six points as the Golden Girls used an 11-4 run in the third quarter to break the game open.

Coach Bill Reed, Nativity girls’ basketball

Bethlehem Christian (5-3), which entered the game as the top-ranked team in the District 11 Class A power ratings, was hampered by a 4-for-16 performance at the foul line.

For Nativity, the win is the product of continued improvement as the season has progressed with Saturday’s point total being a season-high. The Golden Girls were the Schuylkill League’s last winless team.

“I am very proud of the work our coaches and players are putting in,” Reed said later Saturday. “We put a goal on the board before our first game on December 2 to get better everyday and today we feel like we are starting to accomplish that goal.”
