Spartans, Hurricanes, Raiders, Miners grab Division I wins
SHENANDOAH — Williams Valley entered Thursday’s Schuylkill League Division II girls’ basketball game at Shenandoah Valley looking to win its 10th straight game and see senior guard Mallory Miller score her 1,000th career point.
The Blue Devils had other ideas.
In perhaps the most surprising score of the season to date, Shenandoah Valley rode the scoring of Gianna Donovan and Jocelyn Chagolla and a stifling defensive attack to capture a 35-23 victory over the Vikings.
In their first meeting of the season Dec. 9 in Tower City, Williams Valley downed Shenandoah Valley 49-22.
Miller, who scored 35 points in Monday’s win over Tri-Valley, was held to two points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. She needed eight to reach the 1,000-point milestone entering the game.
Donovan finished with 13 points and Chagolla had 11 as Shenandoah Valley opened the game on a 12-3 run and didn’t look back. The Devils led 20-10 at intermission en route to holding Williams Valley to its lowest point total of the season.
Quin Smeltz paced Williams Valley with nine points. The loss drops the Vikings (13-3, 6-3) into a third-place tie with Marian (9-7, 6-3) in Division II, three games behind first-place Lourdes (13-1, 9-0) and two games behind second-place Mahanoy Area (12-3, 8-1). Williams Valley faces both Lourdes (Monday) and Mahanoy Area (Thursday) next week.
