HS Boys’ Wrestling: Bears’ Quick takes 3rd at Mayhem

INDIANA — Kyler Quick battled to a third-place finish for Mahanoy Area on Saturday in the 57-team Mid-Winter Mayhem boys’ wrestling tournament at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Quick, a senior 215-pounder, went 6-1 at the two-day event, posting three pins, one technical fall and two major decisions among his victories. His only loss came in the semifinals, a 7-4 sudden-victory setback to North East’s Logan Latimore. Quick (24-1) rebounded by defeating Line Mountain’s Jacob Schwalm 10-1, then rolled past Erie Cathedral Prep’s Omar Arrington 10-1 for the bronze.
The Golden Bears had two other placewinners — Rory Dixon, fourth at 152; and Arturo Reyes, sixth at 127.


Dixon (23-2) went 6-2 in the event, defeating Northampton’s Chase Grabfelder 9-3, Greenville’s Kaysom Mataria 3-1 and Cedar Cliff’s Josh Weaver 7-3 after falling in the quarterfinals. Bald Eagle Area’s Caden Judice topped Dixon 4-1 in their third-place match.
Reyes (20-4) went 5-3 for his sixth-place medal. He had three technical falls and one pin among his wins. Trinity’s Jordan Manyette decisioned Reyes 4-0 in their fifth-place bout.
As a team, Mahanoy Area finished 22nd among 57 schools. Bishop McCort won the team title with 201.5 points. Chestnut Ridge placed second with 162.5, followed by Northampton with 158. Montgomery (122.5) and Altoona (121) rounded out the top five.
Cards go 4-1 at Ephrata Duals
EPHRATA — Izzy Miller (172), Zach Kurtz (215) and Scout Frantz (285) had 5-0 records to lead Pine Grove to a 4-1 day at the Ephrata Duals.



The Cardinals (11-4) fell to Central Dauphin (47-19) but defeated Central Dauphin East (44-18), Camp Hill (35-31), Garden Spot (59-14) and Ephrata (35-33).
Miller (19-8), Kurtz (21-3) and Frantz (20-5) had four pins and one decision apiece.
Aaron Osatchuck (145) went 4-1 with three technical falls and one decision. He raised his record to 20-3.
Liam Levan (114), Drew Hikes (133), Jimmy Hoy (139) and Austin Frantz (160) had 3-2 records for the Cardinals.
Girls’ Wrestling
PV’s Banks earns Souderton gold
SOUDERTON — Brenda Banks continued to blitz through the competition, cruising to a championship at the Souderton Big Red Girls’ Invitational at Souderton High School.

Banks, Panther Valley’s senior 235-pounder, had a forfeit and a 21-second pin to reach the finals. There, Banks decked Strath Haven’s Kendall Bizzel-Brown in 1:45. Banks improved to 17-0 on the season and 87-2 for her career.
Panther Valley’s Alisa Williams (170) earned a silver medal. She posted three pins to make the finals but dropped a 10-1 major decision to Palisades’ Bryce Snyder. Williams’ record is 17-2.


North Schuylkill’s Ka’ren-is Holmes (100) wrestled to a fourth-place finish. Holmes got pinned in 4:18 by Conwell-Egan’s Alexis McIntyre in the bronze-medal bout. In the first round, Holmes defeated McIntyre in a wild, 25-22 decision.
Neshaminy won the team title in the 40-team event with 157.5 points. Souderton placed second with 145.5 points, followed by Emmaus with 141. Owen J. Roberts (138.5) and Upper Dublin (128) completed the top five. Panther Valley placed 16th, and North Schuylkill finished 31st.
