HEGINS — Tri-Valley came to play on Rick Kline Memorial Day.
Myah Schwalm pitched a no-hitter and the Bulldogs belted the softball all over the yard to overwhelm Halifax 10-0 in five innings in a non-league game Saturday at Hegins Park.
Rick Kline Memorial Day is held in honor of a former coach at Tri-Valley and a Hegins Valley community supporter who passed away in 2013 due to cancer. Annually since 2014, hundreds of fans flock to Hegins Park, enjoying concessions, camaraderie and varsity, JV and junior high softball at two fields. The event supports the Tri-Valley High School Softball Association and honors the memory of Kline, who coached for more than 20 years alongside good friend and head coach Marty Shade.

Rick Kline’s daughter, Kate, started the Rick Kline Memorial Games in the spring. She also started an annual softball tournament in August to raise funds for individuals going through cancer and to continue scholarships at Tri-Valley High School for seniors in recognition of their service to their community, as well as senior softball players. Prior to the game, the Tri-Valley Softball Boosters made a donation to the scholarship fund.
Schwalm sparkled in the circle. She walked Bebe Roland, the first batter of the game, then retired 15 straight Wildcats. Schwalm struck out six and needed just 49 pitches (36 strikes) in the gem.

“Actually I didn’t (know I had a no-hitter) until they announced it at the end,” Schwalm said with a laugh. “I felt great, though the walk wasn’t the best thing to come out, but it still worked out in the end. A big day like this, it just feels great to have the win. It meant a lot, especially to Coach Shade, and it’s just a big win in general. We knew it was going to be a hard one, and we fought until the end.”
Shade tied legendary Minersville coach Ken Schneck for the all-time Schuylkill League softball wins record with his 546th career victory. Schneck went 546-103 in 26 seasons with the Miners; Shade is 546-212 in 35 seasons with the Dawgs. Shade can break the record Monday when Tri-Valley hosts Marian. Game time is 4 p.m. in Hegins.

While Schwalm shut down Halifax (11-6) all afternoon, Tri-Valley (12-4) gave their pitcher plenty of support.
The Dawgs, who have won five in a row, scored in each of the four innings they batted to steadily pull away for the 10-run-rule victory.
Alina Leonard set the tone by clubbing a leadoff triple and scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning. Lydia Rodichok and Savanah Stiely added back-to-back RBI doubles to extend the lead to 3-0.
Tri-Valley added another three-spot in the second inning when Ava Snyder and Schwalm delivered RBI singles and Liv Witmer drove in a run with a groundout. The Dawgs made consistent contact against Roland, striking out just twice in 26 plate appearances.
Stiely (3-for-3, three doubles, two RBIs) led off the third with a double down the right-field line and scored on Ava Snyder’s groundout.

And in the fourth, Tri-Valley scored a run on an error, on an RBI single by Rodichok and an RBI double by Stiely.
Rodichok finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs; Leonard went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Ava Snyder had a single, two RBIs and a run scored.
