MINERSVILLE — “Wake Up the Echoes.”

With a nod to those lyrics from the Notre Dame fight song, Tri-Valley and Minersville played a classic Schuylkill League Division II softball game Thursday that stands up to any of the countless clashes the Bulldogs and Battlin’ Miners had through the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and to today. The effort, intensity, perseverance and skill both teams displayed harkens back to those players and teams of yesteryear and puts today’s girls right alongside of those who came before them.

When this chapter finally ended, Tri-Valley held on for an 8-4 victory in 11 innings on a sun-splashed, summery day at Ken Schneck Field. The game lasted 2 hours, 54 minutes — every tick of the clock filled with emotion, enthusiasm and the mental strength to never give up and never give in.

“I have so many memories at this field, most of them heartbreaking memories,” Tri-Valley coach Marty Shade said. “We had some good games. It’s always a battle with us and Minersville. It’s a good rivalry. Same with Williams Valley. We’ve been battling each other for years and years.”

For the first eight innings, Tri-Valley starter Myah Schwalm and Minersville starter Eila O’Brien matched zero for zero. Both got into a few jams, but both worked out of them with the help of their respective defenses.

So we went to the ninth in a scoreless tie.

Minersville’s defense, which had been so strong to that point, broke at the wrong time. Two errors and a passed ball helped Tri-Valley (7-3, 6-2 D-II) jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the inning. Ava Snyder laced a two-out, two-run single, and another run scored on an error.

Somehow, Minersville (8-5, 5-3) found the fortitude to rally and tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth. O’Brien walked with the bases loaded, and Bella Rizzardi (3-for-5) followed with a two-run single to send the game to the 10th.

Both teams cashed in their “ghost runner” as the international tiebreaker took effect in the 10th inning. Tri-Valley’s Lydia Rodichok hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3, and Minersville’s Paige Laudeman answered with a sacrifice fly of her own to tie the game 4-4.

On to the 11th.

Finally, the Dawgs got their timing down against O’Brien. After Kenzie Tobin cashed in the ghost runner with a sacrifice fly, Snyder blasted a triple to the fence in right field. Alina Leonard followed with an RBI double to left field, and Summer Cupsta slammed an RBI triple to center field. Cupsta circled the bases when the Miners made an error on the relay from the outfield.

After 161 pitches (101 strikes), Schwalm gave way to relief help from Leonard. Minersville put two runners on base, but Leonard got O’Brien to line out to center fielder Liv Lupole to end it.

Schwalm got the win in the circle, going 10 innings and allowing 10 hits, four runs (three earned), striking out six and walking four.

O’Brien went the distance for Minersville. She hurled 11 innings, throwing 151 pitches (99 strikes). O’Brien allowed 12 hits and eight runs, but none of those runs were earned. She struck out two and walked two.

“I’m very impressed tonight with Minersville,” Shade said. “They’re back. Their coaches are doing a great job with those young kids, and they play hard. They don’t give up. … Give my girls credit, too. They were struggling a little bit with the off-speed stuff, and finally they timed it a little bit better and hit some shots and came through. Myah Schwalm pitched her heart out.”
