Dinger pitches 5-inning perfect game for Cardinals

PINE GROVE — Everything clicked for Pine Grove Area on Saturday night.

Jamie Dinger pitched lights-out in the circle. The defense played flawlessly behind her. The Cardinals put the ball in play and ran the bases aggressively. They scored early. And they scored often.

It all added up to a 10-0, five-inning victory for the Cardinals over Tri-Valley in a non-league softball game under the lights at Susan Y. Stump Field. A huge crowd filled the park on a picture-perfect evening for softball.

The home fans enjoyed quite a show.

Dinger dominated in the circle, mixing speeds and locations brilliantly, disguising her pitches so that Tri-Valley’s batters didn’t know what was coming. She finished with a five-inning perfect game — 15 up and 15 down — with seven strikeouts. She threw 64 pitches (46 strikes). Dinger pitched a seven-inning perfect game April 4 against Williams Valley in the championship game of the Cardinal Classic.

Callee Leffler set the tone for PGA in the bottom of the first inning by blasting a leadoff triple, her league-leading sixth of the season, to deep right field. Hannah Aungst followed with a squeeze bunt, and Leffler scored for a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.

The Cardinals (13-1) leaned heavily on the short game, and the move paid huge dividends. Pine Grove Area finished with four sacrifice bunts and several other bunts that turned into hits as the Cards tested and broke down the Tri-Valley defense.

The bunt game produced a three-run third inning that turned a slim 1-0 lead into a 4-0 cushion.

The lead just grew from there.

In the fourth, Aungst had an RBI single, and Dinger lofted a sacrifice fly as the advantage reached 7-0.

And in the fifth, Aungst ended the game with a three-run triple to right-center. Leffler scored the final run from first base, following closely but being careful not to overtake the runner in front of her.

Leffler reached base all four times she batted on the triple, two walks and a hit by pitch. She scored three runs, giving her 34 in 14 games this season. Aungst finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs and a run scored.

Khloe Jessman went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Meadow Umbenhauer finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as Pine Grove Area got contributions up and down the lineup.

PGA’s defense did its part, too. Of note is first baseman Ava Behrent. In the second inning, the freshman caught a foul popup against the fence in front of Pine Grove Area’s dugout. And in the fifth, she preserved the perfect game by leaping to catch a high throw and quickly swiping the tag to retire a runner at first base.
