SHENANDOAH — Hunter Correll and Schuylkill Haven’s baseball team continue to gain consistency.

Correll pitched six innings and allowed just three hits as Schuylkill Haven bulldozed Shenandoah Valley 10-1 in a Schuylkill League Division II game Tuesday at Babe Conroy Field.

The senior right-hander gave up an unearned run and struck out six across his outing. A steady force in the Hurricanes’ program for years, Correll brings veteran experience to a developing Schuylkill Haven squad.

“He has been lately,” Hurricanes head coach Scott Buffington said of Correll’s recent performance. “We just need him to continue to do that as well as improve his outings. Sometimes he loses focus for a batter or two and then (the opponent) gets guys on. If we’re not up a lot of runs, that can put a lot of pressure on a defense, but he’s been coming through. And we’ll take that and hopefully he continues to improve as the season goes on, and we’ll all continue to improve as the season goes on.”

Schuylkill Haven (9-2, 7-0 D-II) plated two runs in the top of the first after Chase Yoder scored on a wild pitch and Talan Spittler drove in Gavin Wade with an RBI single.

Brayden Maksimik led off the bottom half of the inning with a double for the Blue Devils (7-4, 4-2), but Correll responded with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to keep the inning scoreless.

Wade and Brayden Fasnacht each knocked in runs before Correll helped himself with a two-run line drive to left field, giving the Hurricanes a 6-0 lead in the top of the second.

Correll issued a one-out walk in the bottom of the second, but he started a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning. He then retired Shenandoah Valley in order in both the third and fourth innings as he and the Haven defense found their rhythm.

Alan Evans singled to spark another offensive outburst for the Hurricanes in the middle innings. Yoder followed with an RBI double and scored on an error. Wade walked and advanced to third on another error and a wild pitch, before Correll plated him with a ground ball to extend the lead to 10-0.

Brandon Boris put Shenandoah Valley on the board with an RBI single to left that scored Jeremy Thomas, who had walked to lead off the fifth.

With the 10-run rule after five innings off the table following the Blue Devils’ run, neither team could generate any more offense.

Evans relieved Correll in the bottom of the seventh. The sophomore walked the first two batters he faced before settling down with two groundouts and a strikeout to seal the win.

At the plate, Correll had one hit and three RBIs, while Fasnacht chipped in two hits and a pair of RBIs.

“Throw more strikes, play better defense and increase the number of good at-bats,” Buffington said of his team’s goals. “Sometimes we look really good, sometimes we look not so good. We swing at pitches we shouldn’t be swinging at, or we’re ahead in the count and still swing at bad pitches. There’s always room for improvement. We’re working toward perfection. We’ll never get there, but we want to continue working toward that.”

For Shenandoah Valley, Maksimik, Boris and Landon Monaghan each tallied a hit. The Blue Devils’ defense turned three double plays in the contest.
