PINE GROVE — North Schuylkill did it again.
For the second time this season, the Spartans defeated Pine Grove in a Schuylkill League Division I softball showdown, this time winning 2-0 under the lights on Tuesday evening at Susan Y. Stump Field.
Brigid Flynn hurled a two-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one for North Schuylkill.
Olivia Jones contributed a single and an RBI, while Gianna Capone delivered a double and an RBI as the Spartans won their ninth straight game.
Pine Grove, which got singles from Madison Shiffer and Lily Flynn, saw its 10-game winning streak end.
With the victory, North Schuylkill (12-2, 9-1 D-I) climbed to the top of the Division I standings. The Spartans are a half-game ahead of Pine Grove (15-2, 9-2). After Tamaqua’s sweep of Blue Mountain — 1-0 on Monday and 4-3 on Tuesday — the Blue Raiders (10-6, 7-4) and Eagles (11-5, 7-4) are tied in third place. The top three finishers in each division will qualify for the Schuylkill League playoffs, set to begin May 10 at Blue Mountain’s Patton Field.
By virtue of its sweep (North Schuylkill edged Pine Grove 6-5 on April 3), the Spartans hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cardinals. Similarly, Tamaqua’s sweep over Blue Mountain gives the Blue Raiders the edge over the Eagles.
