HS Baseball Roundup: Yenser’s walk-off slam lifts Tamaqua over Tri-Valley
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Jake Yenser delivered one of the biggest swings of Tamaqua’s season Saturday — and it was worth the wait.
The Blue Raiders completed a thrilling comeback in walk-off fashion, topping Tri-Valley 6-3 behind Yenser’s grand slam in the bottom of the seventh in a Schuylkill League Division I game at Robert Wetzel Field.
The game had been suspended Thursday in the bottom of the fourth with two outs due to weather and resumed Saturday afternoon following non-league action between Danville and North Schuylkill (see below). The game took place on North Schuylkill’s turf field to ensure its completion.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, Tamaqua (18-1, 11-1) cut the deficit to one with a two-run frame. Then in the seventh, Maximus Najarro hit a two-out single, Brayden Witkowski walked, and Mason Ligenza reached base on an intentional walk to load the bases. Yenser stepped in and crushed a walk-off homer to center, sending the Blue Raiders pouring out of the dugout in celebration.
Yenser finished 1-for-3 with four RBIs. Ligenza reached base twice and scored two runs, while Luke Kane added a double and two RBIs. Najarro added a hit and a run scored.
Cooper Ansbach earned the win in relief, striking out four over two scoreless innings. Starter Noah Mateyak worked three strong frames on Thursday, allowing three hits with four strikeouts. Yenser threw the middle two innings.
Tri-Valley (15-5, 8-4) did all its scoring in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Braeden Doyle. The Bulldogs totaled nine hits, led by Doyle, Jack Wehry, and Trey Porter with two apiece.
